Scott E. Salyards, 45, of Bloomington has been charge with his seventh drunk driving offense and had a bail amount of $250,000 set for him as the direct result of his number of offenses. He now faces up to $25,000 in fines and 10 years in prison. He appeared in Dodge County District Court in November.
According to the complaint, Salyards was southbound on Highway 26 in Emmet Township when he was clocked by a sheriff’s deputy for driving 71 mph in a 55 mph zone. When the deputy pulled over and spoke to Salyards, he could smell the odor of alcohol and found an empty beer can in the passenger side floor.
The complaint says that Salyards said he was heading from Juneau to Beaver Dam. When the officer told him that he was on Highway 26, which is not the correct route, Salyards said that he thought he had already passed Highway 26, but said it could have been Highway 33.
When field sobriety tests were performed, the complaint states that he failed all tests and that he blew a .087 in the preliminary breath test, slightly over the legal limit of .08 percent. Salyards car was searched, there was an open beer can still containing beer wedged between the seats.
According to the complaint, Salyards was concerned that he would be extradiated from Minnesota to Wisconsin as he was on probation for a 2011 conviction of OWI.
According to Wisconsin District Court records, Salyards was given a suspended six year sentence in July 2011 for his OWI conviction under the condition he would serve five years of probation. Violating his probation meant the six year prison sentence went into effect.
Salyards pervious drunk driving offenses in Minnesota occurred in 1998, 2003, 2004, and 2006. He has another drunk driving conviction in Washington state that occurred in 1992.
